Serenity Garden Design
About Us

Serenity Garden Design was started in 2005 by Christy Scerra and Hannah Taylor.  We met while attending classes for the Washington State University Master Gardener program.  After working in different nurseries, our paths crossed once again working at Portland Avenue Nursery in Tacoma.  We could see the growing need for garden designers and installers in our area, so we started our own company.

In the spring of 2006, Serenity Garden Design became the first landscape company to be awarded 5 stars for the Pierce County EnviroStars program in recognition of our work to green our business.  We've shown that we lead the way in reducing, reusing, and recycling our waste that comes from landscape installations and day-to-day operations.

October 2007, Christy and Hannah became Certified Professional Horticulturists through the Washington State Nursery and Landscape Association.  Only after the grueling testing procedure did we prove that we excel in plant identification; insect and disease treatment recommendations; botany; and standardized landscape principles. (Something we knew all along, now it's official).

Our biggest asset to our garden design process is our natural "yin and yang" personalities.  Designing a garden with two completely different views affords us the luxury to bounce ideas of each other and create the ultimate garden for every landscape.  From Asian inspired living spaces to colorful tropical courtyards our designs are as unique and inspired as each one of our clients

Christy Scerra’s love for gardening came very early in her life.  With a dad that grew up on a farm and a garden loving Grandmother.  Many hours were logged in the garden doing chores, tending to the plants, growing vegetables, and learning about the Earth.

After touring the globe for 13 years as an Audio Engineer for concerts, Christy felt the need to find a more "grounded" career working with plants and returning to her childhood roots.  She started working in the local nurseries and enrolled in the Master Gardener program. She finally got to put her business degree to use the day Serenity Garden Design went into business.

Christy's personal gardening style is directly influenced by her little piece of paradise in the middle of the city.  Heavily shaded by mature trees on 3 sides, she has a wonderful shade garden full of Japanese Aralias; collections of Hosta; and all kinds of Northwest natives.  The one and only little space that receives full sun, is packed with rows of Lavender and Rosemary, blanketed by a patch work mix of Thyme.

Hannah Taylor began her gardening career right after college. After
graduating from Tulane University with a degree in Spanish and Classical
Studies, she decided to take the Master Gardener class at WSU. Once she started working at some of the local plant nurseries, her path to a gardening career took hold.

Hannah's garden style is bold, spicy, and farmy. Drawn to the
jewel-toned colors and striking foliage textures of tropical plants,
Hannah likes to push the zonal boundaries of winter hardiness. Mix in
her family’s suburban "farm" and the garden beds full of her favorite
perennials and you have an exciting mix of plants that impress the
neighbors and drive-by lookers.

Every client provides a unique situation.  Gardening with wildlife, drought tolerant landscaping, and following the strict guidelines set by the homeowners association are just a few of the creative challenges we've encountered.
